Programme

The Master of Science Economics is a joint program of the Vienna University of Technology and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS).
The program requires the full-time commitment of students for the entire two years. Graduates are equipped to succeed in an ever more competitive academic environment. The curriculum emphasizes analytical competence, economic intuition and solid empirical work. Students are expected to perform on a level with their peers at top-ranked departments (e.g. Princeton, Stanford, LSE, and UPF).
These goals are achieved by attending a carefully designed sequence of courses and through an overall preparation in subject matter and techniques that goes beyond course work. Work in teams and the acquisition of advanced mathematical skills are the key to a successful completion of the program. Courses will be completed by the end of the second year, with the fourth semester mostly dedicated to independent research leading to the master’s thesis prepared under the direction of a faculty member.

"Many of the most pressing contemporary public policy issues can be addressed by using economic analysis. This ranges from fiscal and monetary policy to deal with business cycle fluctuations to competition policy in a customs union. The skills gained in the MSc will help you confront the questions faced by key policy makers."
Prof. Bernhard Felderer, Director, IHS Vienna

"Through the cooperation of two leading academic institutions and their combined expertise, graduates of the MSc Program Economics are expected to develop qualifications and competences which will enable them to achieve success in an increasingly competetive academic environment."
Prof. Hans Kaiser, Vice Rector for International Affairs, TU Vienna

The students get a practice-oriented basic knowledge and have the possibility to participate in research programs. Because of this excellent education graduates of the TU Vienna are quickly employed in industry and business right from the university.

Not only in teaching but also in research the TU Vienna is involved in many different fields: from atomic and particle physics over material physicists, surface science, interface and thin-layer research, plasma technology up to the development of modern production technologies, the research of information and communication technologies and business and investment mathematics. The TU Vienna is also providing impetus for the continuing development of equipment using renewable energy resources. Furthermore the research at TU Vienna is an important contribution to the stimulation of the domestic economy. In addition the Continuing Education Center of the TU Vienna offers a broad variety of excellent postgraduate programs, e.g. MBA, MSc, and certified programs.

Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS)

Austria's premier postgraduate research and training institute has combined theoretical and empirical research in economics and other social science disciplines since its founding by Paul F. Lazarsfeld and Oskar Morgenstern in 1963. Through the interaction between scientific theory and practice, IHS provides innovative value-added services to policy makers and business practitioners. Key features are interdisciplinary exchange, a truly international faculty, a commitment to quality and original scholarly output.

The IHS actively and highly successfully assists its graduates in finding suitable placements. Activities are coordinated by the Director of Graduate Studies, with the entire faculty actively involved by making good use of its extensive research network. Graduates of the program typically continue their graduate education at top PhD programs or take on jobs in important think tanks, policy making institutions, or the financial sector.
Recent graduates have continued their education at the following highly regarded PhD programs: Brussels, EUI Florence, Northwestern, LSE, Princeton, Stockholm, Tilburg, Toulouse, and Simon Fraser University. In the last two years three graduates have also been hired as Economists by the Austrian Central Bank and two by local universities. Some of the graduates are now professors at Bogazici, Kellog, Northwestern, LSE, Munich, Princeton, Yale, Zurich, or work in top positions at ECB, EU, IMF, OECD, OPEC, the Worldbank, and central banks around the world.
The current governor of the Austrian National Bank, Prof. Ewald Nowotny, was one of the first students in our program from 1967 - 1969.
