Programme

Promoting sustainability, handling conflicts, increasing benefits, conserving biodiversity: the planning and management of pro- tected areas involve many different legal, administrative and technical realities. The demand for highly skilled experts is growing enormously.

Our vision is to promote biodiversity conservation and regional sustainable development in Europe and worldwide by educating and training efficient and effective managers of protected areas.

The MSc Programme is set up in a public-private partnership between the University of Klagenfurt and E.C.O. Institut für Ökologie, a company specialised in planning and consulting protected areas. An international advisory board is established in order to support and control the quality of the courses and students’ master theses. Members of the advisory board are represantatives of well-known institutions or NGOs like e.g. IUCN, WWF International, CBD, Convention on Wetlands and Network of Alpine Protected Areas.

Target audience

Planning and managing protected areas is a challenging and rewarding mission. In the MSc programme we want to provide a profound education for personalities, who want to shape the planet's future.

The learning goals are:
  • an excellent and comprehensive understanding of the aims and roles of protected areas in relation to the conservation of biodiversity and (integrated) regional development;
  • detailed knowledge when applying the full range of tools available for the management of protected areas so that they can effectively fulfil their aims;
  • an ability to analyse and solve problems encountered when establishing, planning or managing protected areas, to conduct inter- and transdisciplinary dialogues with all stakeholders and to develop and implement appropriate integrated solutions;
  • the development of hard and soft skills to create mutual benefits of nature conservation on the one hand, and for the local population on the other hand, particularly in peripheral regions as well as in developing countries with the aim of sustainable regional development.

Organisation

The Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt has been futureoriented and dynamic from the day it was founded. Today it is Carinthia’s leading educational and research institution. It opens its doors to the whole world and thrives on interculturality and people whose minds know no frontiers.

In contrast to the mass universities, the structure and the manageable scale of the university have positive effects in many respects: on research and its organisation, on teaching operations and on internal administration.

These benefits are compounded by the specific character of a genuine campus university. This compact structure is of considerable advantage for the organisation of student life (lecture halls, library, refectory, student dorm etc) and for cross-disciplinary research activities.

A high quality of life and intercultural exchange thanks to international partnerships and joint-study programmes with other universities coupled with leisure and sports activities on and around Lake Wörthersee make life on campus both exciting and varied.
